For our first video we took advantage of a break in the weather (it's been biblical rain here for weeks, but yes, the Sun actually shone) and grabbed a solid hours training ride with two tough climbs. The route stats at High Kilburn looping around the lanes for a 15 minute warm up and heading straight up Wass Bank. If you're not from the North Yorkshire area you might not of heard of this climb but it's a real cracker. Wass bank is a solid 0.9 mile long averaging 8% and maxing out at around 16%. For this video we hit it hard with a solid 8 min threshold effort.
The video then drops back down Wass and takes the rough lumpy lane skirting the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors escarpment to get to the bottom of the classic White Horse bank - much of this climb is on the tough side of 20% maxing out at around 25% - It's a tough local climb but pace yourself because you do get short breathers as the climb levels for a few pedal strokes.
Despite the fact it's a bright day you'll see the evidence of the heavy rain on the road surface as you climb. Luckily, you won't need to wash your bike afterwards so you can just focus on hitting the right effort levels - don't be fooled be the sight of the White horse as you climb, it's still a long way to the top from hear - so keep something in the bank for the stinging final ramps. You can only really relax as you to get level with the glider station
Give yourself a well deserved pat on the back, and turnaround for the descent of White Horse - taking car for oncoming cars in the middle of the road on those hairpins 😉
Once you're at the bottom spin your legs and enjoy the return to High Kilburn and a well deserved cuppa or pint.
